Was born and lives in Santa Fe, a city in the Argentine Pampas.
It was there and very early in her life that her vocation for art awakened. She has been a professional artist for 20 years now taking part in competitions and salons and exhibiting her work at the main Museums and Cultural Centers in Argentina; she has also exhibited her work in Rouen, France (2002) and in Fribourg, Switzerland (2005 and 2007).
Down the years, always pursuing very visual, personal work, she has created her own technique: intertwined ribbons which she calls “Criollo weaving”. A sort of weave or warp similar to that used by the native peoples of South America in their basketry but which Gabriela has achieved with her brush. This trompe-l’œil creates very particular texture and volume, at times covering the whole plane, at times appearing in the shape of “Cows”, or the face of Eva Perón, or a tree, or other Argentine icons.
Thus the cow as icon, as symbol, stars in the paintings of this artist and in her latest work appears in a playful and irreverent way in her recreations of classic paintings such as Gustav Klimt's “Kiss”, Pablo Picasso’s Guernica or next to Andy Warhol’s Marilyn.
“It is Argentina in the world”, she says.
Pertovt has her own original image and she makes use of unusual resources in the visual arts field…it is not just about the creation of that weave but the exhibition of it as carrying a load, at times of criticism, at times of humour and irony about current affairs; she achieves a curious syncretism of the genuine and the foreign, the popular and the historical.
A true colorist, this artist explores time and again all the resources in Argentina modern art.
She has been awarded more than 30 prizes and distinctions by critics from Argentina and abroad among them the Elizabeth Greenshield award, Montreal, Quebec, Canada (1990) and the Fundación Pro-Arte de Córdoba award which allowed her to make a study trip to Paris (1997).
